Ellie, Magda and Nadine from the Girls in Love series are all grown up. On the day art teacher Ellie turns 40, she finds out her comic strip of Myrtle Mouse is being dropped. And a cancelled train means her daughter Lottie can’t join her for the day. So she takes herself off for a swim where she meets animal behaviourist Alice and is talked into getting a tattoo.
Then a surprise meeting with an old teacher brings a new love interest into her life.
I’m not the right age to have read Wilson’s YA series about the three teenage friends, and sometimes during this adult sequel, it did feel that names were being dropped in purely to update those readers, so you do feel a bit left out.
For Girls fans looking for that nostalgia hit, it’s worth knowing that Magda and Nadine remain very much side characters which means all us newcomers don’t get to know them well at all. However, I was still enough invested in Ellie’s life to want to know how things turned out.
