Second Time Around - Beth Kendrick (2010)

Arden, Jamie, Brooke, Cait and Anna were all English majors in college. Every year the girls got together for a reunion and talked about how they wished they could change their career paths. When Arden passes away, she leaves $1 million to the four remaining friends to live out their dream careers. The friends reunite in their old college town and attempt to restart their lives. Jamie becomes an event planner and finds herself planning a wedding for an old flame. Brooke buys a bed and breakfast and quickly realises that she has bought a money pit. Cait decides to become a romance novelist and ends up falling for her former English professor. Anna has been struggling with fertility issues with her husband. When her husband announces that he needs a break from their marriage, she decides to use her $250,000 to become a pastry chef. This is a fantastic novel about lasting friendships and second chances. Ever wondered what you'd do if you were given a second chance in life? Beth Kendrick's latest novel Second Time Around is about four friends who get an unexpected inheritance to help them pursue their dream careers. The summary says: "Every summer, four college friends hold a mini-reunion. They laugh, reminisce and commiserate about their soul-sucking jobs. Maybe they should have listened to everyone who warned them to study something practical. Then an unexpected windfall arrives - one million dollars - with the stipulation that they use it to jump-start their new careers. Almost overnight, a professor, a bartender, a copywriter and an administrative assistant reinvent themselves as a novelist, an event planner, a pastry chef and a bed-and-breakfast owner. But the changes in their professional roles create unexpected turbulence in their personal lives, and soon the secrets and scandals from their past start to resurface." Second Time Around is out in March. You can read the first chapter at the author's website.
