SPECIALTY SHELF

Sugar Baby - Gesine Bullock-Prado with Tina Rupp (photographer) (2011)

The thing that drew me to this cookbook is the cover. Wow, what a gorgeous cover! Also an interesting premise: a sugar cookbook, who doesn't like sweet stuff? The author is very informative, and funny. I feel like you actually get to know her, and that makes following the recipes more enjoyable. Gesine gives a cute paragraph before each recipe, and each paragraph gives you an idea of where she got the recipe from, how she named it, and a fond memory of making each delicacy. I made the marshmallow fondant (yum!) and rock candy (so much fun). Though I was nervous about boiling sugar/using a thermometer for the first time, Gesine lead me into the process with ease. I plan on making many more recipes in the near future, and would one day like to chat with the author - she seems so fun and down to earth. This won't be my last book from Gesine, the founder of the Gesine Confectionary product line and sister of actress Sandra Bullock. (AV)
