Thursday's Children - Nicci French (2014)

Thursday's Children is the fourth instalment of the Frieda Klein crime series. This chapter sees the psychotherapist travelling back to face her past, a past she would have rather left behind. When an old school friend approaches Dr Klein about her daughter's wellbeing, the histrionics of her own haunted history begin to connect with those living in her home town of Braxton. Frieda has only one choice... and that is to return to the scene of the crime and solve the mystery surrounding the lives of those who still remain in her childhood town. As the painful memories begin to unfold, Frieda is faced with challenges of her own, such as piecing together the puzzle without the assistance of local law enforcement. In a town where no one wants secrets revealed, Frieda pushes through with the support of her London friends and the ghost of a man who once tried to kill her. Full of psychological intrigue and suspense, this is a tense novel, and not one which necessarily requires the back story of the previous novels. It begins with Frieda experiencing flashbacks which sets the scene for first-time readers. As a stand-alone, Thursday's Children is compelling and addictive. Wonderfully written by a husband and wife team, the novel encompasses all aspects of what a good thriller should be. Nothing is given away throughout the storyline until the very end, making the reader want to continue until the last word is read. (MP)
