I Take You - Eliza Kennedy (2015)

Lawyer Lily is getting married but that doesn't mean she doesn't still hook up with other men. Her fiance, archaeologist Will, is perfect, but Lily can't imagine only being with him for the rest of her life. Maybe she's more like her father, who's on to his umpteenth marriage, than she would like to admit. Will Lily decide that marriage isn't for her or confess all before the big day? Lily is quite a polarising character, with her unconventional views on monogamy and general approach to life. Despite not being my sort of humour - or character - this is a well-written debut that is just crying out for a sequel.

I Take You, the debut novel by former Manhattan lawyer Eliza Kennedy, takes a satirical look into the institution of marriage and monogamy. The summary says: "Meet Lily Wilder: New Yorker, lawyer extraordinaire, blushing bride. And totally incapable of being faithful to one man. Lily's fiance Will is a brilliant, handsome archaeologist. Lily is sassy, impulsive, fond of a good drink (or five) and has no business getting married. Lily likes Will but does she love him? Will loves Lily but does he know her? As the wedding approaches, Lily's nights - and mornings, and afternoons - of booze, laughter and questionable decisions become a growing reminder that the happiest day of her life might turn out to be her worst mistake yet." I Take You is out in May 2015.
