HOLLY HEPBURN

A Year At The Star And Sixpence (2016)

Sam has just lost her job as a PR agent and Nessie is getting a divorce from her husband of 15 years. They haven't seen their alcoholic father for years, but, when they inherit his pub, The Star and Sixpence, in the small village of Little Monkham, they decide to pack up their things and leave the bright lights of the city and move to the small village to start a new life. As they try to restore the pub to its former glory, they will have to deal with Franny, the strong-minded woman who seems to be in charge of the whole village, manage their disastrous romantic lives, and cope with their father's death.
What I liked most about this novel is the relationship between Sam and Nessie who, although completely different, are very close and support each other. Add a cast of interesting and colourful characters, romance, and an atmospheric setting and you get an enjoyable and captivating novel. (NP) 7/10
