Dating the Alphabet - Samantha Napier (2015)

Ramona, with the help of her best friend Emma, is dating her way through the alphabet. But will she find a guy worth seeing again before she gets to Z? The concept sounded promising enough, and with Ramona as the manager of a restaurant with character wait staff, like Tarzan, Fat Elvis and Little Red Riding Hood, the supporting cast is quirky enough to pique your interest. However, despite the writer injecting plenty of humour, the dates all became fairly forgettable and it soon got tired that most of Ramona's predicaments essentially came down to her being drunk. After one workplace incident, which if you turned it around and put a man in Ramona's shoes would have been totally unacceptable, any remaining sympathy for her evaporated. Her redemption was too little, too late. One for the ladettes, perhaps.

Dating the Alphabet, the debut novel by Australian writer Samantha Napier, is about a woman trying to date her way to a happy ending. "Ramona Rawlings is going to make dating fun again. Armed with an alphabet poster, post-it notes and her best friend Emma, Ramona is going to date the alphabet - from A to Z, Archie to Zolon and everything in between. Throw in the chaos of managing a theatre restaurant with a roster full of strong personalities, unfulfilled dreams and lustful hook ups and Ramona's world is turned upside-down. In between Evan the arrogant, Ivan the emotionally stunted and Glen the racist, Ramona discovers what she really wants: to be a good friend, to emotionally connect with a man and to replace her vodka-tonics with kale smoothies. But how many frogs will she have to kiss before she finds her fairytale?" Dating the Alphabet is out in March 2015.
