If you've hit the turkey and Christmas pud a bit hard this year, this memoir from Shauna Reid may be just the thing you need to inspire you to battle the bulge.
Seven years ago, Reid was 23 years old, living in the Australian capital of Canberra and weighed 160kg (25 stone). Determined to turn her life around, she created the successful blog The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl and her transformation from couch potato to svelte goddess began. More than 12,000km and 80kg (13 stone) later, Reid is literally half the woman she used to be. Her book The Amazing Adventures of Dietgirl follows the twists and turns of her lard-busting adventure as she curbs the calories and learns to love the gym. There are travel tales from Red Square to Reykjavik, plus romance and intrigue as she meets the man of her dreams during a pub quiz in Scotland. As her UK visa runs out, will she be deported back to Australia or will love triumph?
It's out just in time for new year resolutions on January 1. Reid now writes about her non-fat escapades at What's New Pussycat? |

Amy's Honeymoon - Julia LlewellynThis is one Roman holiday you won't want to miss out on. For Amy the only thing missing from her five-star honeymoon in Rome is a husband. But after her cancelled wedding and no chance of a refund on the honeymoon, she's decided to jet off to bask in the Italian sunshine alone. Except no one seems willing to leave her alone. If it's not nosy hotel guests, it's famous movie stars desperate to exchange suites. How's a girl supposed to wallow in misery when, under protest, she's dragged off to shop till she drops, or to film premieres or made to ride around the streets on a Vespa? |

YEAR OF AUSTEN
She's been dead for nearly 200 years but Jane Austen remains a powerful influence in the chick lit world. Have you lost count of the number of books that have come out this year tied to the author and her characters?
There was Austenland, by Shannon Hale, about a woman who enters the make-believe world of Regency England at an Austen-themed resort.
Me and Mr Darcy, by Alexandra Potter, sees a New York bookstore manager time-travel back to meet the man himself.
In Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict, by Laurie Viera Rigler, a woman wakes up to find herself living the life of a single woman in Regency England.
Lost in Austen: Create Your Own Jane Austen Adventure, by Emma Campbell Webster, allows the reader to become Elizabeth Bennet and determine which storylines and characters you will encounter.
You can even learn some moral lessons from Austen's characters in Debra White Smith's faith-oriented, non-fiction book What Jane Austen Taught Me About Love & Romance.
Not exactly fitting the chick lit definition but if you want to know about life from the perspective of Fitzwilliam Darcy, try Mr Darcy's Diary by Maya Slater, which traces the events of Pride and Prejudice through the hero's eyes. Or there's Mr Darcy's Diary, by Amanda Grange, and Mr Darcy Presents His Bride, by Helen Halstead, about what happens after his marriage to Elizabeth. You can even find out about the love interest from Emma in Mr Knightley's Diary, by Amanda Grange.
On the screen scene, this year has seen the release of the movie adaptation of Karen Joy Fowler's The Jane Austen Book Club.
And hold on to your bonnets ladies, cos the Lost in Austen TV mini-series is on its way next year about Amanda (Jemima Rooper), who swaps her modern-day London life with Elizabeth Bennet (Gemma Arterton).

Jane Porter's sequel to Odd Mom Out has just gained a new title, thanks to one of her readers. After the original title Alpha Mom had to be dropped because of a copyright issue, Porter's website called for suggestions, and the winning title was Mrs Perfect. The book, out in May, is about the leading alpha mother from Odd Mom Out. Here's what the cover looked like before the title change (we've blanked out the title). The synopsis is: For Taylor Young life is very good. She has a handsome husband who loves her, three gorgeous children, a personally designed and decorated dream house. Suburbanite trendsetter and super mom - life couldn't be more perfect. And as long as no one notices the fragile woman beneath her coiffed and polished image, things will stay that way. Then, a devastating secret bursts Taylor's fairy-tale bubble, suddenly making her a cul-de-sac pariah, and stripping her of the role that defined her. With her struggling to maintain her alpha image, Taylor finds help from the unlikeliest of people, her nonconformist nemesis, Marta Zinsser. But to become the woman her family truly needs, Taylor must first believe in the person she is hardest on - herself.

SCREEN SCENE

PS I Love You : If you've been holding your breath, waiting to see if the movie lives up to Cecelia Ahern's moving book, wait no more. The movie, directed by Richard LaGravenese, will have the audience alternating between laughter and tears. Academy Award winner Hilary Swank does a fine job portraying Holly Kennedy, the American widow trying to piece her life back together without her Irish husband Gerry, who dies of a brain tumour. Gerry, played by relatively unknown actor Gerard Butler, is a charming, full-of-life character who arranges for letters to reach Holly to teach her how to move on with her life. Like in the book, Holly's best friends, married Sharon (Gina Gershon) falls pregnant and man-hungry Denise (Lisa Kudrow) gets engaged - and there's even a boating mishap. But her love interest Daniel (Harry Connick Jnr) is a quirky bartender from her mother's pub, who doesn't think before speaking. And in another departure from the book, Holly's pre-planned holiday sends her to Ireland. It is a movie that deviates from the book's plot enough to give fans who have read the book inside out a fresh experience, without losing any of its emotional power. Highly recommended - just remember some tissues!
